It was 6 pm yesterday and I was pretty tired. Tending to a seven month old is funnn but also a bit tiring. I’d RSVP’d to this event of two authors sharing their writing and publishing story. I debated it, my husband pushed me to go. I’d been home all day. I’ve been trying this thing where I sign up for things on a whim if my instincts feel called to it. Later, obviously, my mind tries to convince me out of it. It’d be easier to stay at home. Chill with the family. Rest. But I went. and I am so glad I went. I walked in alone, found myself a spot at bookhero which just overlooks the Ocean. It’s a beautiful spot – container converted bookshop where all the books are between AED 10-20. I fell in love the moment I saw it – I believe almost two years ago. The event was small and intimate which I really enjoyed and the personalities were just so much fun! Two women – who I found hilarious and so full of life – who told stories that I felt I could relate to. I’ve heard of inclusion. I’m all for it. But hearing it, is kind of different. I hear of Salha’s talks of Zanzibar, of Oman, the Quran, niyyah as well as all the unspoken things that happen in our societies. In the same stride, I hear Amandeep speaking about the millenial dating life, the pressures of the older generations as well as the “interesting” parts of online dating. I have yet to delve deeper into their books but there is such a familiarity to their stories coupled with beautiful fun senses humour. Point being, I left buzzing, I left inspired, there is great power to telling our stories, it brings to light our ability to improve, it enables the reader to feel known and understood, it brings awareness and awareness to change. I have yet to delve deeper into both of their books but I can’t wait to read them both.
